Schloss

The Charm of Socialism

Before Armin Mey took over the castle, the ‘party school’ of the FDGB (Free German Trade Union) received, hosted and trained international guests here. Numerous artefacts left over from this period lend the castle a charming, nostalgic air.

Commune or Cloister?

Where you sleep in the castle is over to you. Your bed can be set up in the grand hall, the library, or the barn. And there are so many corridors that you could sit alone in the library all day without somebody else straying in. Anything goes – in this castle different rules apply: your own!

First Class Hotel Décor in the Guest Rooms

newChairsThe rooms in the castle are all fitted out with furniture and décor from luxury hotels from all across Germany.

As an example, the bath in room 15 was formerly Udo Lindenberg's bath from the Hotel Intercontinental in Hamburg, and the furniture in the foyer is from Hildegard Kneef’s suite in the hotel 'Schweizer Hof' in Berlin.

History

Beesenstedt Castle is a former princely residence in the town of Beesenstedt in Saxony-Anhalt. Until 1947, it was the dwelling of the Nette family, whose ancestors go back to the German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock. In 1915 the castle was restored by Paul Schultze-Naumburg.
In 1921, the castle was ransacked by Max Hoelz during the “March Battles” in central-eastern Germany. Several assembly rooms can be found in the castle due to his usage of the castle as a lodging house for the freemasons. It remains unclear which lodge the rooms belonged to. In World War Two, the castle served as the headquarters of the Saxony-Anhalt Regional Council. In the post-war period, the central FDGB School “Otto Schlag” used the castle’s 100 plus rooms, and after the fall of the GDR the castle was empty until 1996. Today the castle is privately owned, and is used for events and as a location for film shoots. The band Rammstein even spent several weeks in May 2008 at the castle, preparing their album “Liebe ist für alle da”. Parts of the film Honey Baby, on which Helmut Berger and the singer Bela B. worked, were also filmed at Beesenstedt Castle.
